Visitors' program, tours

History is presented in a very special way at Mauterndorf Castle in the Lungau region. Drawing from international models, it offers a journey through time back to the Middle Ages.

Adventure exhibit 

Actors portray the castle residents as they lived at the end of the 15th century – true to life and in period costumes. You can visit the Salzburg archbishop at his summer residence and watch him make the final arrangements for a spectacular hunting feast together with his attendants.

You can almost smell and taste the dishes and will learn all kinds of interesting and amusing facts about music, dance, clothing and life at court during the Middle Ages interactively.

Scenes are staged on 6 floors of the "peel tower" to demonstrate how the tower was used during the Middle Ages. Themes such as "dungeon & treasure vault," "seeking refuge in the tower during a castle siege," "defense," "emergency accommodations," "larder" and "cooking hearth" are acted out for visitors in a realistic and exciting portrayal.

The highlight of the tour is the originally preserved Gothic watchman's room. The fantastic view from a height of 44 meters over the village of Mauterndorf and beyond to the fascinating alpine landscape rounds off the thrilling tower experience.

Lungau Regional Museum

Visitors will learn many interesting facts about Lungau customs and its flora, fauna and minerals at the Lungau Regional Museum in the castle's southern tower.

What does a "Sauschneider" do? Who is Samson? What is an "Echtling"? You will know at the end of the museum tour.

The tour of the adventure exhibit is taken with a personal Audio Guide, available in German/English/Italian.
