Adventure at Castle Mauterndorf - An urge for the Middle Ages?
Such an urge is something that will strike as soon as you make your
rounds at the
newly developed Adventure Castle Mauterndorf, a good hour by car from
the city of
Salzburg. The former customs fortress from the 13th century, which
almost fell to
ruins in the 19th century, has now been transformed into a "living time
machine."
Here you embark upon a journey 500 years into the past. The Middle Ages
come
alive! One of the most influential Archbishops of the then autonomous
province of
Salzburg enjoyed spending his free time - also to escape the plague
which then
raged in Salzburg - in the serene Lungau. He is in the midst of
preparations for a big
celebratory meal. What was eaten and drunk in those days, what the
table manners
were like, how one dressed, made music and lots more can all be
experienced
close-up. Yes, you even meet the Archbishop and his contemporaries
personally.
However, the Middle Ages also had their dark sides: attacks and defense
were a
part of everyday life. Have you ever loaded a real arquebus? Tried on a
suit of
armour? A visit to Castle Mauterndorf offers the chance to do all this.
Construction
history, social history, anecdotes and, to cap it all, a unique
knights’ playground
called "Burg in der Burg" all provide an unforgettable excursion into
the natural
paradise of Lungau.
By the way: the snack bar "Burgschenke" will delight you with its
appetizing snacks - a visit to the Lungau Landscape Museum in the South
Tower will give you an insight
into the beauties of the untouched nature of our area in the province
of Salzburg, the
Lungau. During the summer months, with prior reservation, there are
chivalry
entertainment programs for those trying to be knights!
The list of offerings has been greatly expanded through
adaptation of
the castle, with dramatic scenery of life at the castle on six floors!
