Residence Salzburg - Prince Archbishop’s Splendor in the heart of the Mozart city
Salzburg’s Residence, in the heart of the city, was once the representational
building for Salzburg’s Prince Archbishops, symbolizing both their spiritual and
worldly power.
The first official reference to the spacious building complex consisting of about 180
rooms and three large inner courtyards, was in 1232. At this time, the Archbishops
were already worldly rulers, thus they greatly expanded their headquarters over the
following centuries as was appropriate to their station as rulers.
On a tour with a personal audio-guide (in 7 languages) one can go on a stroll
through 2 centuries of cultural history and discover in the sumptuous state rooms a
harmonious architectural unity of Renaissance, Baroque and Classical styles.
Masterpieces of handicraft, construction - and ceiling painting, frescoes, stucco,
antique furniture, embroidery, marquetry, marble portals, numerous valuable clocks
and paintings permit one a glimpse into the richness of earlier eras.
On the third floor is a Residence Gallery with a large collection of paintings of
European masters from the 16th to the 19th centuries.
